Our good friends from the open source BlackBerry® developer group OSBBx are running a contest this month to promote the creation of open source BlackBerry® WebWorks™ apps made with the bbUI.js framework. This is the framework that shows how to create a native look and feel for BlackBerry applications using web technologies, and is itself open source.

They’ve got a great list of prizes in several categories:

  • Best Overall Application
  • Best use of bbUI.js
  • Best Application by a first time developer
  • Best Port of an application for BlackBerry OS or BlackBerry® PlayBook™ to the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha testing device

This is an outstanding opportunity to get your feet wet with the many repositories and samples that we have available on GitHub and see how awesome it is to work with open source. It’s surprisingly easy to put together a cool app with bbUI.js and take advantage of the BlackBerry® 10 native look and feel. For example, check out these applications made by members of the OSBBx team themselves:

Of course, like any of our BlackBerry Devs, if you get stuck on something you can always reach out to the BlackBerry community and Developer Relations for a little boost, too. The contest runs until the end of the month so don’t delay — get coding!
